DC Universe Classics - Wave 19 Preview

With the recent announcement of the DC Universe Classics Wave 20 last month back at the San Diego Comic Con, and DCUC Wave 18 hitting the online stores and eBay this  mouth, we've almost forgotten that just back in June, Mattel had also announced the line up for Wave 19. So I thought it would be a good time to a closer look at the action figures that will make up that set.  As mentioned in my previous post, this is a JSA themed wave much to the delight of many DC fans.  So lets take a look figure by figure.

First up is Kobra.  Looks like a cool figure.  He has the scales all over his body which we've seen before on previous DCUC action figures such as Aquaman  from wave 2, Deathstroke in wave 3 and Copperhead in wave 12. The head sculpt is of course, entirely new and his body appears to be the same general body type as most DCUC action figures with some minor unique differences such as the cape, boots and his cobra staff.

Golden Age Hawkman looks, well, very much like Hawkman from DCUC wave 6. One main difference is the head sculpt.  His mask has an open beak and you can see pupils in his eyes.  There only other difference i can see is Golden Age Hawkman has no Hawkman symbol in the center of his chest. Other than that, the two figures are pretty much the same action figure and to be quite honest, this is the figure from wave 19 that i am the least excited about.

Magog is quite unique.  Aside from the body standard body size, I'm liking the gold armor he supports.  This action figure appears to have some cool sculpt detail and although he's not one of the most common villains in the DC Universe, he will probably be one of those pleasant surprises that you weren't expecting much from.

Sandman reminds me of The Riddler from Wave 5 just because of the green suit, but if you look a bit closer, the two figures are not quite the same.  Sandman, obviously, is supporting a mask and purple cape with his green suit and also, his suit is double breasted, where as wave 5 Riddler's is not.  The rest of the body parts though, are very similar.

Stargirl is perhaps the most popular character in this wave, but I have never been a fan of the smaller female sculpts that we've seen on other characters like Catwoman, Cheetah, Harley Quinn and so one.  The arms are super skinny and if you're not careful, can break just by trying to take it out of the packaging.  If you can manage to be carefully handle that, there is not too much more to complain about as Stargirl is a spot on to likeness to the comic book character.  For those of you that don't mind the sculpt size, you should be happy with her.

Fans of the Atom should get be pleased with this action figure but to non-hardcore collectors, he may be less appealing, not coming with any accessories and quite frankly, the most boring head sculpt of the bunch.

On to the Collect and Connect action figure S.T.R.I.P.E.  Expect him to have similar parts as Stel from the Green Lantern Wave 2 series.  The legs are exactly the same.  But it works for this character.  As far as a paint job goes, S.T.R.I.P.E. is a little less interesting than Stel but still a very cool action figure to own.

So that sums up DC Universe Classics Wave 19, due out later this year, probably towards October 2011.

DC Universe Classics - Wave 20 Announcement (SDCC 2011)

TO FIND DC UNIVERSE CLASSICS WAVE 20 ON EBAY - CLICK HERE

This past weekend was the very popular 2011 San Diego Comic Convention and collectors of the DC Universe Classics toy line got some interesting news.  First regarding DCUC wave 20 - the line has been announced and there are pictures of some (but not all) of these action figures.  Originally, there were rumors going around that this would be another Blackest night set similar to the "Rainbow Lantern" Set (DCUC Wave 17) which was recently released.  Wave 20 was suppose to feature characters in their Lantern Uniforms.  Fortunately, this isn't the case (mostly)  Lets take a look at Wave 20's line up first:

First we have a new Green Arrow.  This one supporting his hooded look.  The face and his bow look very similar to the Green Arrow figure from Wave 9 but the rest of this action figure appears to have some very different detail then the Wave 9 version

Its only fitting that this DCUC Wave 20 also include a Red Arrow action figure to go along with Green Arrow.  Interestingly enough, his outfit appears to be very similar to Wave 9 Green Arrow's look with the exception of the belt.  Hopefully it's not an exact copy.

Next up we have the Team of Hawk and Dove.

And then we have the Reverse-Flash.

Now the following two action figures who ARE confirmed as part of DCUC Wave 20 were not revealed at the 2011 SDCC.  Apparently we will not get a look at them until the next New York Comic Convention.  These action figures will be:

White Lantern Flash (Barry Allen)

-and-

Sinestro Corps version of Sinestro.  This is an interesting inclusion.  We've already got a Sinestro Corps version from DCUC Wave 2 but clearly many fans were not happy with that figure due to Sinestro being too short.  An other Sinestro figure was then released in the Green Lantern's Light 5 pack.  This Sinestro basically had the same body size as Hal Jordan with the wave 2 Sinestro's Head attached.  A third version of Sinestro was then released along with a Hal Jordan in a separate Two-Pack.  It was the Thaal Sinestro version and not the Corps version.  It was taller than Hal Jordan and a skinnier body type. So it will be interesting to see which body Mattel will do with Sinestro this time around.

Finally the Collect and Connect action figure for DCUC wave 20 will be

So there you have it. DC Universe Classics Wave 20.

That's not all the news coming out of the SDCC.  Mattel has also announced their "Club Infinite Earths" which will provide collectors with exclusive action figures.  Head over to Mattycollector if you'd like to subscribe and read it carefully.  Initial cost is $30 bucks but it there are other fees that you will need to pay out as well.  If enough subscriptions are purchased to make the service go forward, the plan is to release 9 monthly 6" figures, 3 quarterly over sized figures, and a club exclusive figure (all figures except the club exclusive will also be available on Mattel's website). The club exclusive will be an over sized figure chosen by fans in a poll on Mattel's website among the following four figures:

Black Lantern Swamp Thing
Metron with Mobius Chair
Rocket Red
Shaggy Man

If enough subscriptions are received, Mattel revealed that the first figures to be released through the club will be:

Red Lantern, Atrocitus

Starman (Thom Kallor)
and

The Flash (Jay Garrick)

On a side note, are you wondering what the SDCC DCUC exclusive was this year?  Take a look:

And finally, some more cross promotional two packs were also at comic con which featurs one DC Universe Classics action figure and one Masters of the Universe character.  Im not a really big fan of these but those of you looking to finish off your Legion of Doom collections might want to get your hands on Bizarro from this set.  Or you can just try to grab a Bizarro off of eBay from the DC Super Heroes toy line back in 07-08.  Its the exact same figure.

There are also suppose to be Two Packs featuring Hal Jordan and Zodiac as well as Supergirl and She-Ra.

DC Universe Classics - Mad Love & Mightiest Mortals PREVIEW

Not to much DC Universe Classics news these days, but something interesting has been buzzing for the last couple days.  I'm not sure that an official announcement has been made by Mattel, but there seem to be 2 new DCUC 2 packs making their way to your friendly neighbourhood department store and now there are pictures to confirm it.

The first is a Joker and Harley Quinn pack called "Mad Love".   You will see that Joker is a re-paint from the DCUC Wave 10 series.  This time he is supporting a black and white tuxedo.  Harley Quinn looks pretty much the same as the original DCUC wave 2 release.  Lets hope this time, Mattel has not shaded her face with blue paint this time which was a HUGE complaint of mine as well as many other collectors.  It looks as though you will get all the same accessories that came with these action figures in their original release.

Next up we have the "Mightiest Mortals" two pack which features the very VERY hard to get Black Adam from wave 9 and Captain Marval, aka Shazam from wave 6.  Both action figures appear to be basically the same as their original release.  As far as I can tell, there are no accessories included in this set.  Those who missed out on the rare Black Adam should be all over this baby.

For those into the repaints or looking for a improved Harley Quinn, the Mad Love two pack may be right up your alley.  Those also looking to finally get a Black Adam of their very own will now have the chance.

If you're looking for DC Universe Classics action figures, there is no better place to find them online than eBay.  You will find such a huge variety, be sure to check out eBay by clicking here

That's it for this post.  Be sure to check back with Action Toy Review for more DC Universe Classics news, info, previews and reviews.

DC Universe Classics - Batman Legacy Action Figures Preview

***WONDERCON 2011 UPDATE - APRIL 8th, 2011***

A couple of new action figures to add to the Batman Legacy line up.  First, we get another classic version of Batman.  Some noticeable differences compared to the other Batman action figures we've see to date in the DCUC line up, specifically a new head sculpt.

The second new action figure is actually just a repainted Batgirl.  Apparently the belt she is supporting in this picture will not be the final version when the action figure is released.   She'll be supporting something a little less bulky.

For more on the Mattel Batman Legacy toy line (which will be released in the fall of 2011), check out my original post below from Feb 2011.

Revealed at the 2011 Toy Fair show is the new Batman Legacy action figure toy line by Mattel which will be released sometime in the late spring or early summer.  This toy line supposedly NOT based on the Batman Legacy comic series but rather is more designed to "celebrate" the Dark Knight's rich history.  I assume this means we're going to get different versions of different characters (could mean a lot of repaints).  The first wave of Batman Legacy action figures will include "Movie Masters" action figures from Batman Begins, all in the 6 inch size, as well as a few re-released/repainted figures and some new action figures based on the new Batman Arkham City video game which will be coming at the end of September 2011.  So lets take a look at the line up:

First, the movie masters action figures which i believe will be sold as a 2 pack.  From Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne in his prototype Batman suit and Commissioner Gordon.

Pictures from the Toy Fair 2011 show that included with the Prototype Batman action figure is a removable ski mask for Bruce.

The Prototype Batman/Commissioner Gordon has been labelled as Wave 1 by Mattycollector and there is also a Dark Knight Batman and Police Honor Guard Joker − "Wave 2" two pack that has been announced.  No pictures or released dates though of TDK figures though.  I assume this means one Movie Master 2 pack per wave.

The following 3 Batman Legacy action figures will be sold as singles:

•Silver Age Mr. Freeze

Here we go, repaints already.  This is simply the Mr.Freeze action figure we've seen previously about 3 times back before the DC Superheroes Toy Line.  In my opinion the Mr.Freeze from the 2007 NYCC is the best version out there. It was very hard to get a hold of if you were not at the show or did not snap it up on eBay when it first came out.  Ive seen recent eBay auction go in the $60 USD range for that action figure.  Since Mr. Freeze is a must for any Batman fan, this will be a decent addition for collectors who are missing him (although, I'm not crazy about the paint scheme).   To read the ATR review click the link to the right--> DC Superheroes Mr. Freeze Review. Next up:

•Platinum Age Batman

This Platinum age Batman is simply, from the neck down, the Batman figure from the DC Superheroes Wave 8 line up (which is considered to be quite rare).  The DCSH Batman from Wave 8 is still one of my favorite Batman action figures to date.  It had a limited release just prior to the DCUC toy line began.  The head sculpt looks exactly like the Sinestro Corps Batman in DCUC Wave 15.

And the third action figure to be sold as a single will be:

•The Joker

For the most part, this Joker is very similar to the DC Universe Classics wave 10 Joker.  The differences being, in the Batman Legacy version, The Joker is supporting a long trench coat instead of the jacket with coat tails and flower on the lapel.  I would guess, the trench coat is probably similar to the one used on The Question from Wave 11, just in purple.  The rest of this sculpt is probably spot on to Wave 10 Joker.  As far as the paint job is concerned, gone are the pin stripped pants and orange vest replaced by a solid purple color for both.  Also Joker's shoes are now all black.

Finally, from the upcoming Batman: Arkham City video game (which is a follow up to the very popular Arkham Asylum video game), we get a Batman and Two Face 2 pack which is also listed as Wave 1.

I must admit that these Arkham City Batman action figures look pretty sweet.  Batman Arkham Asylum had some amazing character designs and you know they will look even better in Arkham City.  It appears these action figures are entirely new sculpts so even though they will compare in size to your DC Universe Classics collection, the will look slightly different.  This does give us potential for finally getting characters such as Poison Ivy, Ra's Al Ghul, a new Killer Croc, Scarecrow and so much more.  Almost every major Batman villain are in these games in some form or another.

That pretty much covers the DC Universe Classics news from Toy Fair 2011. If you missed my previous posts about other Toy Fair announcements, such as DCUC Wave 18 and the Crime Syndicate box set, be sure to check them out.

DC Universe Classics - Crime Syndicate box set preview

The 2011 Toy Fair included several DC Universe Classics goodies including the upcoming 2011 Wal-Mart exclusive 5 pack.  Much like the 2009 Gotham City 5 pack and 2010's Green Lantern's Light 5 pack, this years 5 pack will just be 5 action figures and no Collect and Connect action figure parts will be included.  The action figures featured will be the characters from The Crime Syndicate.  If you're unfamiliar with the Crime Syndicate, I strongly suggest you watch the direct to DVD DC movie "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths  Although not totally true to the original story of the Crime Syndicate, its very entertaining and will give you an idea of who these characters are.

So lets take a look at the Crime Syndicate 5 pack box set. First, we have a classic version of "Johnny Quick" who is obviously the counterpart of The Flash

Next we have the Hal Jordan counterpart, "Power Ring", also a classic version

Next, the Batman counterpart, Owlman, which appears to be a more modern sculpt

Wonder Woman's counterpart, Superwoman, also a modern version

And finally, Superman's counterpart, Ultraman.  We have seen Ultraman before in a two pack with Alexander Luthor.  The Crime Syndicate version appears to have a new head sculpt and a slightly different costume design.

So there you have it.  I don't think a release date has been announced at this point but if you compare this set to the previous two Walmart box sets that came out in 2009 and 2010, you're probably looking at a late summer/early fall release.

That's it for this post. Feel free to post any comments and check out the ATR Poll section on the left hand side menu.  Also be sure to check back for more DC Universe Classics news, info, previews and reviews.

DC Universe Classics - Wave 18 announcement

New Pictures added (Feb 20, 2011)

DC Universe Classics Wave 18 rumors have been finally put to rest this past weekend at the 2011 Toy Fair in NYC and it turns out the, unconfirmed rumors of a "Super Friends" theme wave are partially true.   Mattel has not yet released any promo photos yet, but once they do, I will post them (Update: promo pics of these action figures have been added plus a picture from the 2011 Toy Fair posted below).  Here is the official CONFIRMED DCUC wave 18 line up.

From the Super Friends TV series in the 1980s, we have Samurai.

(cool looking sword accessory)

Also from the Super Friends TV series, Black Vulcan

looks as he has hand attachments similar to Red and Blue Superman from DC Universe Classics Wave 2

and again from the Super Friends, Eld Dorado

Unfortunately, by the looks of this pic and his closed fists, I'm guessing no accesories are included with Eld-Dorodo (I thought it was "El-Dorado??)

One of two non Super Friends action figures, Bronze Tiger with removable head (like Low and Maash from the DCUC Green Lantern Wave 1 set.)

So we get a removeable head plus it appears that Bronze Tiger is hold two weapons that are similar to Nightwing's Escrima sticks from DCUC Wave 3....However, in the picture below from Toy Fair, 2011, you'll notice he is holding a sword and a staff of some sort.

And the other non Super Friends character, a modern version of Captain Boomerang

Hopefully he is comes with some Boomerangs at the very least.

And at last, the final member of the Legion of Doom (if you include Bizarro and Scarecrow from the DC Superheroes toy line), Toyman.

A bit muscular for Toyman but none the less, glad he's finally coming.  He appears to come with both a yo-yo and spinning top accessory.

The Collect and Connect action figure for DC Universe Classics wave 18 will be, no surprise here, Apache Chief (Still no pictures yet)

Edit: pic posted Feb 17, 2011

The rumors had suggested that we were getting a new Bizarro action figure in this set with an interchangeable Superman head as well as a Metallo figure in DCUC Wave 18 but those rumors have proven to be false.

Can't say I'm too crazy about this announcement. Its hard to say who, in this set, is the main action figure in this set.  I will get Toyman to finish off my Legion of Doom collection and another Flash villain is more than welcomed with Captain Boomerang in my collection, but these other characters from the show are not appealing.  I will, in all likelihood skip the rest of this set.  This will give me more time to catch up on other DC Universe Classics action figures I've missed from previous sets.

Look for Wave 18 to make an appearance sometime in the fall of 2011.
